Unique Wedding Cake Ideas

A traditional wedding calls for a church venue or romantic location, a white gown for her and a black tux for him, attendants, a bouquet, and a cake. All of these factors can be rather generic, or an imaginative bride can stamp her personality on the whole affair with just a few small adjustments. An especially fun way to tweak tradition is to be creative with the cake. There are truly as many possibilities there are brides.

Why not try a cupcake wedding cake? This option provides the yummy cake that people expect, but can be versatile in flavors, colors, and design. Most bakers these days offer this option. It's no longer a brand new idea, but is still an unexpected twist on the traditional cake.

Another unusual cake alternative is a doughnut cake. This is a collection of doughnuts, individually frosted, all one flavor or a variety of flavors, arranged in a festive manner to suggest a cake. People think this is fun, and it's totally unexpected. Plus, some people really prefer doughnuts to cake.

A romantic choice that not many people think of is to build the cake around a small water fountain. The trickling water sounds and the added light make a beautiful presentation that guests will talk about for years.

Cakes don't have to be white with buttercream frosting. Virtually any flavor is possible, from white to chocolate, pumpkin to cheesecake, red velvet to carrot. It's certainly acceptable to vary the flavors from one layer to the next. Frosting, too, can be any color, and can complement the season, the bridesmaids' dresses, or the flavor of the cake. White or ivory is still standard, but any color the bride can imagine can be created by a good pastry chef. Imagine a dark frosting with a profusion of brilliantly colored flowers or leaves scattered all around the cake. Color can add drama, whimsy, texture, and interest to the cake.

Wedding cakes are typically round, stacked units that get smaller toward the top. Just because they've usually been this way doesn't mean they have to, however. Cakes can be made in any shape and stacked, staggered, or spread out however the bride wants it. A baker can even stack the layers so they look like they're leaning and about to topple. Cakes can be made to look like wrapped presents, buildings, people or animals, trees, flowers, or any of hundreds of shapes and structures.

When it comes to unique wedding cake designs, a bride and groom should brainstorm all the fun ideas they can, sit down with a willing pastry chef, then wait for the oohs and ahs from impressed guests.

Preparing the Perfect Wedding Cake

I have come up with various ways of making extra money in order to supplement the family income throughout the years. For instance, I have typed term papers for students. However, this service is no longer profitable because we are now in computer age. I have also baked pans of bars for special events to help a local caterer. I also do special occasion cakes to earn extra money. I usually bake these cakes for birthday parties, retirement parties and anniversaries of the people I know. I willingly use different flavored cake mixes and a variety of fillings in the layer cakes. I am getting quite a few requests because my cakes are unique and tasty.

Since she was a little girl, my godchild has been the number one fan of my cakes. Every year since she was born, I have been making her birthday cake. I also made her first communion cake, confirmation cake and graduation cake. It came as no surprise to me when she asked me to make her wedding cake.

I was a bit apprehensive because I had never made one before. I had always declined the requests to bake this kind of cake through the years. This is because I was concerned since I do not have the right pans to bake a wedding cake, and I do not have the frosting skills needed for such an important event.

I explained to my godchild that I could not do her wedding cake because of these reasons. However, she told me that she did not want the traditional wedding cake with tiers and fancy piping and flowers. She wanted several individual layer cakes of different flavors and fillings. This is because she was planning to have the cakes displayed on a table with different height cake plates. The cake that she and the groom would cut also has to be her favorite flavor.

I was still apprehensive about doing it, even if she gave me an interesting idea for a wedding cake. You see, I did not feel that my decorating skills were good enough to be displayed and photographed as part of an event as important as a wedding. However, my godchild would not take no for an answer. She went on and told me what flavor combinations she wanted and which fillings. She also told me that she was not ordering any other wedding cake. She would not have any if I did not make the cakes, so I was forced to make the cakes she ordered.

I loaded all the cakes into my car on the morning of the wedding. I then drove to the banquet center where the reception was to be held. My godchild has prepared a separate table set up with different pedestal plates of varying heights to place the cakes on. I have to admit that the cakes looked very nice once I had arranged them all. Three of my godchild's friends ask if I would make a wedding cake arrangement for their weddings during the reception. This could be the start of a new business.

A Guide to Wedding Cake Frosting

Next to the bridal gown, the wedding cake is perhaps the most detail intensive element of planning your event. It will take days if not weeks before the future bride can choose the exact design and color of her cake. On top of this, it may take her forever to decide the cake frosting to be used by her baker.

This is the reason why you need to get a reputable baker so they can make intelligent suggestions as to which frosting would be best for the chosen cake design. You may know a thing or two about cakes but only those who have experienced in decorating them can tell you the pros and cons of using a specific frosting. Here are some of the types of cake frosting commonly used today.

Butter cream

Butter cream is a very versatile ingredient because it can be used both as a filling and a frosting. Bakers prefer this frosting because it is easy to color depending on the motif of the wedding. It is also easy to come up with various designs using this frosting. The only problem is that it can easily melt especially if the temperature is not controlled so watch out for butter cream if you are holding an outdoor reception.

Fondant

If you have seen satin smooth cakes that look perfect even if shaped like a gift, flower or anything at all then most probably it has been designed using fondant. Fondant icing is picture perfect and no one can argue with that. However, it does not taste as delicious as the other icing and some would even say it tastes bad. Some bakers however have a trick of using butter cream beneath the fondant to give it a really nice flavor.

Marzipan

This is a favorite among bakers as it tastes good and can be made to look like fondant icing. Marzipan contains sugar, eggs and crushed almonds making it a very tasty topping. However, using marzipan can be very expensive so be prepared for your wallet to take a hit.

Royal icing

This is perhaps the cheapest frosting anyone can use for a wedding cake. It can also produce picture perfect cakes with very intricate designs. Royal icing is actually a very hard frosting so there is seldom need to refrigerate it. You can have your baker create miniature cakes for you using some of the frosting you are interested in and then you can taste them and decide which one will look and taste the best.

If you are contemplating getting a sculpted cake you can really have any three dimensional design that you can think of. Why not try a hamburger and fries for a fun and light hearted beach wedding cake. The sky is the limited once you get a sculpted cake.

Mini Cakes and Cup Cakes

International Wedding Cake Ideas

While the traditional wedding cake offers a vision of white, an increasing number of couples are becoming interested in selecting a design, style, and presentation that greatly strays from the norm. Today, wedding cakes showcase elaborately stacked tiers, multi-colored frosting, lively blooms, and decorative fruits. In order to make sure a different take on wedding cake design and construction is accomplished, some couples are now turning towards international creativity and tradition to elevate their reception centerpiece. Below you will find a few worldwide ideas to mull over when it comes time to choose your wedding cake:

Caribbean Island Ideas

Sometimes, a couple is interested in infusing a bit of tropical allure regarding their wedding cake. Caribbean newlyweds usually feast upon fruitcakes. Often, the cakes are dark and decorated with dried fruits. Some of the flavors that guests enjoy include rum, wine, and sherry. A rum-laced fruitcake is also a popular selection in the West Indies. In Bermuda, cedar saplings are placed on top of wedding cakes as a symbol of growing love between the newlyweds. After the ceremony, the saplings are then replanted.

Asian Themes

A fun wedding tradition among the Japanese is to display imposter cakes instead of the actual wedding confection. These cakes are made of artificial rubber and iced in wax. When the bride and groom insert their knife into the fake cake, sometimes a puff of steam or another occurrence takes place. At times, elaborately decorated dummy cakes are made of Styrofoam and heavily frosted. In the kitchen, the real cakes are hidden. In China, it is not uncommon to encounter many layers of cake meant to stand for the "ladder of success." In Korea, wedding couples often slice into a tiered sponge cake with non-dairy whipped cream.

European Delights

A sponge cake with a rich nut taste is popular in Germany, which is then laced with liquor or syrup. Sometimes, jam, nougat, or marzipan is used as a filling. Ganache or fondant often tops the cake. Cream-filled pastries with a caramel coating are often erected into a tall pyramid to represent a French wedding cake. The Norwegians enjoy wedding bread topped with cream, cheese, and syrup. In Iceland, a ring-shaped pile of almond pastries are used to create a pyramid for their wedding cake. The center is then filled with candies or fine chocolates.

In Denmark, the cornucopia wedding cake is made of almond and marzipan - shaped like a ring. In the center, candy, fresh fruit, or sorbet is found. To include a wedding cake of the British Isles, you may side with a spiffy fruitcake made with cognac-soaked dates, raisins, currants, prunes, and orange peel. Sometimes, the cake is covered in fondant, brandy butter, or marzipan. Irish and Scottish cakes may include a three-tiered confection with an infusion of bourbon, brandy, or whiskey. An almond paste is often spread between the layers.

Mediterranean Magic

A common Italian wedding cake is filled with chocolate custard, vanilla custard, rum cream, and fruit - comprised of various tiers of pound cake. The elaborate display is then decorated with flowers and royal icing. A Greek wedding cake is made of honey, sesame seed, and quince, which are meant to symbolize the long-lasting commitment couples may share with one another. Additional Greek cake creations include sourdough wedding bread, flourless almond cake, and sliced almond decorations

Elegant Wedding Cake Toppers

If you are looking for an elegant topper for your wedding cake than a monogram cake topper may be the way to go. Perhaps the typical bride and groom figurines or the funny, cartoon style toppers do not fit in well with the rest of your wedding plans. There are many styles of monograms that can be used to complete the look of a sophisticated wedding cake.

First, you should think about what initials you will be using. Many couple use the first initials of their first name surrounding the first initial of their shared last name in the center. Other options would be to use just the initials of both of your first names or just the one initial of your last name. Once you start looking a bit online, you will see examples of all of these options.

You should also think about what type of letters you would prefer - fancy letter in script or something more simple and casual. If you are planning a traditional wedding or are looking for something very elegant, a nice script font would be appropriate.

Once you start looking for your wedding cake topper you will see there are also a lot of choices in the material that the initials are made from. You will see simple designs created in brushed metals or acrylic and also very fancy initials made from crystal and covered with jewels and sparkles.

Before you begin shopping, make sure that you know the diameter of the top layer of your cake, if you have already planned that out. This will allow you to choose a design that fits nicely on the top of your cake. It is also a good idea to think about the color of the frosting or fondant, so you can coordinate the cake topper with your cake.

Monogram cake toppers can fit into any budget. Simply designed initials start a slow as $10 and get more expensive as they get fancier. Keep in mind that this item may be kept as a keepsake from your wedding, so you might want to purchase something that will last through the years.

You can find monogrammed wedding cake toppers in wedding supply stores and online. Because there are so many options available, it is a good idea to make some of the decisions mentioned here to narrow down your search. Once you find the perfect top for your cake you will be one step closer to your vision of an elegant wedding reception.

Wedding Floral Arrangement Ideas For Your Cake

While I understand that the concept of having a wedding floral arrangement for your wedding cake may seem a bit odd. The truth is many brides are deciding to take a more active and affordable route in planning and paying for their weddings. These brides are also discovering that paper flowers have more uses than they ever dreamed imaginable.

If you think crepe paper or mulberry paper flowers look stunning in your bouquets and decorating the reception hall wait till you see what a wedding floral arrangement can do for the cake!

You have two options for the wedding cake. You can make it yourself or you can have a baker make you a wedding cake and apply the frosting and the tiers. Unless you have a good amount of experience in baking and frosting wedding cakes it is advisable to purchase a plain frosted cake. You can still choose the amount of tiers you want and the color of the frosting.

When it comes time to decorate the cake you will want to have it delivered 24 hours in advance. If the reception has a safe place for your cake, then I suggest you have it delivered there and decorate it there. Actually before you decorate the cake you will want to have it sitting in the location you have chosen for it. The bakery has a special delivery table and they can set it on the table of your choice. What you will need is a large brown box one that is about double the size of the cake. You will use the box to cover the cake. It will require 3 or 4 people to remove the cover and replace it etc...

For a less stressful cake decorating adventure have your cake delivered the day before and set up. Cover it with the box make sure the box is tall enough so it does not touch the cake and will still be tall enough to not touch the cake once you have decorated it. That is why I suggested a box that is double the size of the cake. Your cake will not get stale overnight. The box will protect it from a hungry little ant that may be milling around unnoticed.

Now that you know the how, why, where and what about your cake let us look at few ways to decorate it with flowers.

· The garland strand is very popular for smaller cakes that do not use tiers but simply sit on top of one another it consists of a number of flowers that wrap around and lay on each layer of the cake. If the cake is sitting on a large round plate then flowers are also set around the entire outside of the cake.

· Bouquet flowers are also popular for any size or shape wedding cake. The crepe paper or mulberry paper bouquet is made without the holder and simply placed on top of the cake in some cases it replaces the bride and groom. However it can also surround the traditional bride and groom. When you make the bouquet - make the center part with a small opening to insert the bride and groom cake topper. This is easier to measure accurately if you have the cake topper available when you make the flower bouquet arrangement.

· Assorted flowers can be placed anywhere on the cake or inserted into the cake using a toothpick. This type of flower cake decoration looks very nice on large tier leveled cakes.

A wedding floral arrangement for your cake can really make the cake stand out! Especially if you choose a theme wedding, such as a Hawaiian theme. Purple and green orchids really bring the cake to life. A simple wedding cake will look stunning with colorful paper flowers decorating it. Allow the seasons to play a role in your wedding theme and in the flowers you choose for your cake or maybe a holiday theme if your wedding is on or near a holiday. Whatever flowers and colors you choose I am sure your cake will be beautiful decorated in flowers.

Traditionally, numerous round and square creations are the most popular shapes of wedding cakes seen decorating the reception area over the years. Today, there is a never-ending selection of cake colors, shapes, and detailing - as far as the imagination will go. Depending on the mood you wish to set for your wedding reception, the shape and design of the cake can help create an elegant, light-hearted, colorful, creative, or classic atmosphere. Below, you will find a few possibilities to consider on how to present your wedding confection:

Round

Round cakes are one of the most popular shapes a wedding display showcases. Over the years, some couples have deemed the basic round tiers a drag, while many others opt for the simplicity and delicate nature of an all-encompassing cake. The round shape of a wedding cake also opens up many doors for decoration, as a collection of satisfying textures and colors are allowed. For example, draping an assortment of flowers over a round wedding cake is a common theme.

Square

The sharp lines and angles of a square wedding cake is a more modern statement. Often, couples choose to soften the display of their cake by adding flowers, light colors (such as pastels), and dainty embellishments. Sugar pearls and rolled fondant are also common selections of ornamentation.

Table Cake

A table cake is small in size, but creates a beautiful centerpiece, where each guest table receives its own selection. A variety of decoration choices (flowers, candy pieces, and fondant) are possible, which replaces the traditional centerpiece of flowers and other selections.

Flowery (Petaled)

The shape of this wedding cake presents a flower-like or sculpted appearance that is sometimes referred to as "scalloped." On the average, each tier showcases its own motif. A high amount of color is often utilized. Soft decorations are commonly chosen and matched with varying textures. An example of this cake shape choice is seen with white fondant, sugar-paste accents, and swirls that are topped with sugary roses and sweet peas.

Six-Sided (Hexagonal)

When looking for a twist on the classic square cake shape, some couples are choosing the hexagonal selection that offers six different sides. Usually, decoration is kept at a minimum to highlight a clean and uncomplicated presentation. Guests are often quite taken aback by the display of such a cake, as the shape of the cake itself is seen as decoration.

Tilted (Off-Kilter)

When moving further away from the simple, traditional shapes of wedding cakes, you may consider an off-kilter design, where each tier is turned 45 degrees. This remarkable display gives the illusion that the cake is actually turning on its own axis. In the end, cake decorators have more space to work with for their embellishments, which includes real or fake flowers, roses (sugar paste), and ribbon.

Selecting and Buying Your Wedding Cake

One of the most crucial and important parts of planning one's wedding is finding the best wedding cake. If your idea of a wedding is pleasing your guests, as well as yourselves, then a wonderful cake is one of the aspects of a wedding that guests remember.

Finding the perfect wedding cake is a task that should be given adequate time and attention. There are many cake decorators available in the industry which offer a variety of offerings that anyone can choose from. Buyers can go directly to their shops and browse through their catalogs to find the one that they want. If the catalog does not contain a preferred choice, you can even ask for a personalized one with their own design and preferences.

In order to get the best value though, you must first know your budget limitation or how much of the wedding expenses are allotted to the cake itself. The budget would determine what kind can be available for you to choose from. Prices vary depending on their ingredients particularly what kind of base it would be decided upon. The icing also varies from one to another.

Knowing this information before consulting providers would save an individual a good amount of time and money as well. With these preferences ready, wedding cake decorators would already have an idea which to offer an individual client. However, this does not mean that what a buyer wants would always be the final product. Buyers should be open with suggestions from the makers and decorators since they know the issues better than anyone else! They would be in the right position to determine whether what a buyer wants is feasible, practical and pleasing.

Pioneers of the cupcake wedding tower saw the potential in cupcakes beyond being the usual sweet treat for children. This paved the way to the birth of the wedding tower of cupcakes, which has been making its way to replace the traditional tiered wedding cake.

If you want your wedding cupcake tower to stand out among the rest, you can opt for square or angular-shaped cupcakes, which are also marvelous when layered into a cake.

Decorating a Wedding Cake

Nearly every family or social occasion includes the eating of food and the drinking or liquids in the celebration. Consider Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. In this piece of writing, I would like to speak about that centre piece of the wedding reception: the wedding cake.

The guests come to eat, drink and be merry and the bride's parents always put a great deal of effort into the organization of the wedding reception. The wedding cake is the focal point of the top table and the whole reception in general. The wedding cake has traditional importance and it is often considered bad luck not to have a slice of the wedding cake.

There are precise rules for the timing of the cutting of the wedding cake that have become part of tradition. For instance, if the wedding reception takes place at lunch or dinner, it is traditional to cut the wedding cake just before the dessert is presented.

However, if the reception is held in the late afternoon or early evening, the cake is served as soon as the guests arrive. In some traditions the bride and groom cut and eat the first slice together as a symbol of their vows to love, honour and obey each other. The remainder of the cake is usually cut by one of the helpers, like the maid of honour or a family relative.

It can be quite hard to choose the wedding cake. Traditionally, people go for a white cake with white icing for weddings, however these days, people are becoming more adventurous and are picking more exotic flavours and colours.

Some people choose to have a wedding cake which has different flavours on each tier. While white icing is still the overwhelming favourite, people do order other colours like pink and yellow. Chocolate and mocha are also popular. These days you can have what you like. It is your day, after all.

Everyone enjoys the wedding reception. It is the favourite part of the wedding day and everyone looks forward to seeing the cake cut and sharing it with the bride and groom.

If you are thinking about becoming a cake decorator, you have a couple of options to go about it. You could buy a book or a course or get a video in order to teach yourself how to decorate cakes from the simple to the ornate. You could also go to a night school class to learn the art or cake decoration.

Without a doubt, the very best way to learn cake decorating is to take a class. DVD's, videos, and books are all well and good, but you cannot converse with them or ask questions. If you take a class for three months or more you will learn more and get a more profound understanding of the art of cake decoration. You will learn how to put real feeling into the decoration of the cake and you will be able to translate the wedding couple's desires into a cake that you and they can be proud of.

The History of the Wedding Cake Topper

Everyone looks forward to their wedding day. What a glorious and beautiful occasion, often symbolized by the wedding cake. Small, medium, or large, single layer or 3-Tier, the happy couple are often looking for a way to make this cake "unique". Enter the humble (or not-so-humble) wedding cake topper. This simple idea has certainly grown and evolved over the years. In this article we will be defining wedding cake toppers, describing some of the modern ones, and examining the history behind them.

So, just what is a "wedding cake topper"? Formally speaking, a wedding cake topper is a small figure or model, often made from light-weight plastic or acrylic, that sits on top of a wedding cake. Traditionally it depicts the bride and groom, often dressed in gown and tux.

With the description out of the way, where did they come from? We have no exact records to verify the first time that someone put a figure or model on top of this special cake, but do know that the tradition dates back to well over 100 years ago.

One possible scenario is described in the following story... The daughter of a baker was getting married, and she wanted to figure out something that would be unique...a symbol of the love that she shared with her future husband. She asked her dad to think of something, and being a baker, he came up with the idea of putting two small figurines on top of the cake he was making for the glorious day. One of these figures would depict his daughter, and the other, his future son-in-law.

Let's fast forward to our "almost" modern day, the 1950's. This was the time of Elvis and roller derby. The future "baby boomers" were being born and growing up, and the "topper" was as popular as ever. Sadly Elvis has passed on, but it looks like the "topper" is here to stay. With the modern era new styles and versions have emerged. For example, today you can get toppers where the bride and groom are of different races, and same sex wedding toppers as well.

A cottage industry of "humorous" toppers has taken off. In one figure, the bride has the groom's leg and is dragging him back to the wedding altar. In another model, he is trying to run away, but she grabs him by the collar to stop his escape.

You can also get "personalized" toppers...with initials of the bride and groom, or a photo, or even a special saying, such as: "Two Hearts Beating as One".

If you would like more information on this subject, or to see examples of some of the more popular toppers, check out the blog at: www.SpecialWeddingCakeToppers.com

Wedding Cake Trends 2010

Just like bridal dresses, wedding cakes can also be trendy or obsolete. A traditional wedding cake is usually a white vanilla cake in towering stacked layers. However, as we move onto the year 2010, wedding cake trends are becoming more and more playful.

Deconstructed Cakes

While the classic stacked cake has remained quite popular, some modern couples prefer deconstructing their cake and displaying each layer on separate floating cake stands of varying heights. This can create a stylish centerpiece for your wedding reception and may also help prevent the dreaded cake-collapsing blunder.

Buttercream Frosting

Fondant frosting is out; buttercream is now very trendy. Even though the famous fondant frosting can make the cake look so smooth and elegant with its matte finish, most people are very unsatisfied with its bland flavor and doughy texture. That's why a lot of bakers now opt for buttercream frosting instead. Besides its light texture and delicate taste, buttercream is also less expensive than fondant frosting.

Cupcake Tower

The cupcake tower trend was actually started by celebrity weddings. Instead of waiting in line for their slice of cake to be cut, each guest can just grab a mini cake and go. This is perfect for a buffet-style wedding reception. Plus, cupcakes are easy to make. If baking is your passion and the number of guests isn't too overwhelming, perhaps you can make your own wedding cupcakes.

Cheesecake with Fresh Fruit Toppings

This wedding cake trend is popular among those who favor a simple delicious cake over a boring cake with ostentatious decorations. To make a cheesecake appear more like a standard wedding cake, frost it with cream cheese icing. However, most couples prefer to leave it plain and adorn it with colorful fruits and flowers.

Unusual Colors

Nowadays the color of the cake doesn't have to match the bride's dress anymore. Chocolate is the new black when it comes to wedding cakes. Bright orange, lime green and baby blue are also in vogue.

Modern Weddings - What Has Changed?

Weddings are often very different than they were fifty years ago. Given all of these changes, it is easy to find that there are clashes between the more traditional rules of weddings and how things actually occur in the third millennium. In this article, I will discuss those changes, and how some of the rules of fifty years ago can be bent and even broken. If you want to do things a little differently, this article discusses what has changed in the last fifty years:

Active Grooms: Fifty years ago, the groom's job was basically to show up. This has all changed. Grooms are often just as involved in the planning of a wedding as the bride. They take responsibility for various aspects of the wedding, depending on the needs and interest of the couple. This takes a lot of pressure of both the bride and the bride's family, who were traditionally responsible for all of the arrangements.

Attendants:It is no longer considered necessary to have attendants of the same sex. Brides may have male attendants and grooms may have female attendants. This is true even of best men and maids of honor (they are called "honor attendants" in this case). It is also no longer considered necessary to make sure that you have exactly the same number on each side.

Expenses: In previous generations, the costs of the wedding were almost exclusively borne by the father of the bride. This is becoming less and less the case. As the bride's parents are no longer automatically expected to pay, be sure you figure out who will be paying for the wedding before making any big decisions. Be sure to be especially grateful for any assistance, as it is no longer considered an expectation but a gift.

Second Weddings: Almost half of all weddings in North America today include at least one person who has been married before. This creates some added complications to wedding planning. Consider how you are to include children, if they wish to participate. Further, be aware of two rules of etiquette when it comes to second weddings. First, children should be the first to know of a wedding, even before parents. They should be spoken with alone so they may express any concerns. Second, it is usually considered polite to tell a former spouse yourself. A phone call should be sufficient. You generally don't want him or her to hear about it "through the grape vine".

Destination Weddings: Today, going on a destination wedding is quite common. Couples will go to another country and be married on a beach or a local church. Usually, because of the expense, such weddings are quite small consisting of close family and friends only. Fifty years ago, this would have been unheard of, and would have been basically considered eloping. Today, it is quite acceptable and is chosen by many couples. Be aware that that there are issues both in civil and church laws that you need to sort out before you leave.

Creative Wedding Cake Stands

So you are getting married and have decided to make your ceremony and reception a unique reflection of you and your spouse to be. You've come up with some pretty good ideas for decorations, flowers, music and the wedding cake.

Now let's figure out a creative way to display the wedding cake. One easy way to create a stand yourself is to take an inexpensive round or square base and cover it. You could choose a beautiful satin fabric or use real or imitation flowers and leaves. Browse through you local fabric or arts and crafts store for ideas. You may be pleasantly surprised at all of the different ways there are to change an ordinary cake platform into a special work of art.

Browsing the internet will also give you many great ideas for wedding cake stands that you don't see every day. If you have some money to spend, there are some pretty specialized and elaborate cake stands out there. You can find stands that revolve slowly or that have an actual water fountain in them. There are now stands that have 10 cascading tiers. Perhaps you could have a different type of cake on each level!

If you would prefer not to spend too much money on the stand for your cake, you still have many options available. Use your imagination to come with ideas that are related to either the theme of your wedding or some of the interests that you and your partner share. One couple that enjoyed surfing displayed their wedding cake on a miniature-sized surfboard. Another couple used a tree trunk for a natural themed stand for their cake.

Some of the simpler types of cake stands lend themselves to further decoration. Purchase a ceramic pedestal stand and find a creative family member to paint the stand for you. The same idea would work well for many of the platform stands that are easily found online. You could also check with the cake designer to see if they will decorate a stand to coordinate with the design of your cake.

This is your special day and you can express yourself in any of the wedding details that you choose to. With a little thought and a look online, you should be able to find or create a beautiful and unique wedding cake stand that will add a special touch to the display of your cake.

Check out unique cake stands for more creative ideas or browse through wedding cake stands for advice on finding the perfect stand for your wedding cake.

How to Choose a Wedding Cake Vendor

Of course, no wedding will ever be complete without a wedding cake. It's one of the event highlights alongside the unleashing of doves and the equally anticipated throwing of the bride's bouquet. The audience does not just anticipate your cake because of the new couples' ceremony, involving feeding each other with a bite off from it. Some couples go as far as inserting wishes of good luck within the cake which the audience (sometimes the bridesmaids and other unmarried girls) were invited to go get one.

These being said, you should definitely take some time to consider the kind of wedding cake vendor whom you would choose to have the work done. Here are some important factors which you may want to consider:

1. Location - Keep in mind that your wedding cake is an edible. You might need to pick it up the night before or the day itself. Here you would need to consider how far the location of the wedding cake vendor from your wedding venue. It might also be a good idea to inquire if they offer delivery services so that you can already take this task off your hands prior or on the wedding day itself. You should also consider this in terms of how the location will likely affect the composition of the cake during the travel time.

2. Cake Design - These days, you can be free to experiment on how your cake will look like. Some even go as far as changing the concept of wedding cakes in little cupcakes instead. This is actually a good way of sharing this sweet remembrance to your wedding guests, as you let them get a cupcake after the wedding reception ceremonies are over and done with. But if you do not have a particular design in mind yet, it would be a good idea to consider a wedding cake vendor that has a portfolio or design gallery where you can choose from.

3. Taste or Flavor - Your wedding cake is not just a decoration on your wedding reception. So you should definitely go for something that you actually like in terms of the taste. These days, fondant cakes are becoming the trend instead of the usual icing-layered cakes. Not only do they last longer and are less likely to get deformed but fondants are relatively less sweeter than the usual icing-layered cakes. Keep in mind that if you can't manage to have your guests split or eat the remaining wedding cake, you would have to bring it all home.

4. Price - Of course, this is also a very important aspect of choosing your wedding cake vendor. This is the reason why you need to canvass first before zeroing immediately on a possible option. Although it might be fun to consider a certain theme for your wedding cake, keep in mind that you also have other wedding essentials on which you would have to spend for too. Make sure you evaluate your choices dutifully when it comes to prices and the value you are going to get.

Wedding Cakes - The Traditional Separated Cakes Are Being Replaced by More Modern Designs

The standard designs of wedding cakes from years past featured independently separated cakes. These cakes were separated by a system of plates and pillars. The pillars were either of Grecian design or Swan style. Perhaps you've seen cakes that had three or four separations, with cake sizes that ranged from eight to fourteen inches.

The bottom tier which would be the largest cake at fourteen inches may have been situated on the top of a fountain stand. In between the fountain stand could be a water fountain, with three cascades, and interior lights plus running water which was possibly tinted with color. On the very top of the smallest cake, the eight inch in this example, would sit a plastic bride plus a groom ornament. The cake itself would have had roses, pearl beading, foil silver or gold leaves, and so forth.

Today's brides are planning their wedding cakes with simplicity at heart. Their preferences are stylish, but simple and down-to-earth, including the dress, reception and most of all, the wedding cake. Straightforward, sophisticated designs decorate today's wedding cakes. Many brides would like cake decorations that replicate the lace plus beading on their bridal gowns, and many gowns feature clean, vintage designs. Requested decorations can be tailored to suit the couple's personalities. Gum Paste, fresh or silk flowers, ribbons, beads, tulle and lace are trendy for 2010.

All wedding cakes are not just white. Off tones, such as for instance ivory are getting increasingly accepted. Circular tiers for wedding cakes still continue to be a favorite choice, but square, octagon, elliptical, heart and hexagon shaped cakes are commonly requested. The flavor of the cakes and fillings differ extensively and brides are frequently requesting non-traditional cake varieties, for example cheesecake, carrot, red velvet, tiramisu and even chocolate cake. Icing requests also have become more varied.

In response, bakeries are not just offering traditional buttercream, but in addition Rolled Fondant, rolled buttercream, non-dairy, whipped cream, cream cheese, white chocolate and marzipan. Brides are requesting handcrafted gum paste flowers. Gum paste flowers are available in over a hundred 100 unique styles, and are purchased through cake decoration supply stores.

Stacked tiers or acrylic stands with separated tiers are fashionable styles. Sculpted cakes are also being asked for more regularly, often for themed weddings. A comparatively new concept that is increasing in recognition is stacked and tiered cupcakes as an alternative choice and a substitute for traditional wedding cakes. Numerous couples are also choosing different decorated cakes for every guest table.

Wedding cakes account for 8 percentage of an average full-line retail bakeries' sales, according to Modern Baking's Retail Bakery Survey. Separated cakes tend to be sold by the portion, so check your area for the going price and charge for the cakes accordingly.

Planning All the Parts of Wedding Cakes

You are planning your wedding, and it is time to choose a wedding cake. Back in the dim, dark ages, the whiteness of the cake was supposed to reflect the purity of the bride. It also usually ensured that the cake itself tasted like paste. Now that we are in an era where the flavor of the cake is a lot more important than the color, there is a lot more to choose from. There are wonderful vanilla cakes, spice cakes, chocolate cakes, or any other flavor available for your wedding. You can even get a gourmet cake to ensure that the flavor will be absolutely scrumptious. The choice is yours.

When it comes to the 'look' of your cake, the choices are apparently endless. You can have a lovely traditional cake with white icing with white flowers and swags decorating it and topped by a bride and groom. Your cake can reflect the colors of your wedding party with the flowers of the bouquets as a part of the icing, either carefully set around each layer or swirled in a cascade falling from top to bottom, widening out at the bottom. There are wedding cakes that are sculptures of the bride, complete with wedding dress. At a medieval-themed wedding, you may see a cake shaped like a castle complete with moat, drawbridge and pennons flying gaily. There are fantasy wedding cakes with fountains incorporated as a part of the cake. Wedding cakes come shaped like hearts, like and individual flower, like pumpkin coaches, like cake houses, and with bridges connecting two sides of the cake. While white is still extremely popular, at least as a base color for the frosting, when it comes to colors or color combinations, your imagination is the only limiting factor.

Wedding cake servers generally come in silver or gold with flower and ribbons to wrap the handles but there are many other options out there. The handles of the servers can be shaped as hearts, as lilies, as cowboy hats, with little gold angels, and with an African-American bride and groom to name but a few of the choices.

Let us not forget the cake topper. The traditional bride and groom now come in a variety of poses from dancing to riding a bicycle. They can even have the faces of the actual bride and groom on them. There are doves and monograms, hearts and rubber duckies. Whatever your tastes, there is a wedding topper just right for you.

Your wedding is special and should reflect your character and your desires. Today's cakes can be tailored to be exactly what you want in look and taste.

If you are looking for more information about a wedding cakes site then you might be able to find this by searching online for keywords like, monogram wedding cake toppers.
